By PBMnetworks This year's WCA Show is planned for June 28th through July 1st in Washington D.C. The show will feature a dazzling array of speakers and exhibitions. The big news at the show will likely be in the areas of regulatory and new product introductions. We are awaiting information on how the FCC will be improving the regulations of the 2.5 GHz Broadband Radio Service (BRS) band (the old MMDS band). This band is the most promising band for carriers to deploy Wi-Max technology. Once the regulations for the band are stable, we should see increased deployments, investments and new broadband services implemented in this band.
The technology is moving forward quickly. WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) technology promises to deliver one megabit user circuit speeds for Internet connectivity to outdoor fixed, portable, and mobile users in a metropolitan area. It is arguably the leading future standard for outdoor broadband wireless. There are other standards (e.g. IEEE 802.20) and broadband initiatives (see for example MESA for public safety), and innovative proprietary techniques (e.g. mesh, smart antenna, etc.) but WiMAX is promising to become a wide spread complement to the very popular WiFi (802.11) unlicensed indoor technology you most likely have in your laptop already. We expect to see major announcements on WiMAX and other advanced technologies at the show.
